Abstract

Recent work on childhood socialization has challenged traditional individualistic based theories and replaced them with collective approaches which stress the importance of children’s agency and their contributions to processes of social reproduction. This recent work has introduced the concept of interpretive reproduction which argues that children produce and participate in their own unique peer cultures by creatively appropriating information from the adult world to address their own peer concerns.  This paper expands on this theoretical work by introducing the notion of priming events which are crucial to children’s life transitions.  Priming events involve collective activities in which children, by their very participation, attend prospectively to ongoing or anticipated changes in their lives.  Ethnographic data on children’s collective activities in American and Italian early education settings are presented to capture the theoretical significance of priming events.  These data and analyses also demonstrate the theoretical power of the notion of priming events for transitions at the micro and macro level in the collective activities of adults.
